Your outline so far only indicates arguments FOR your claims but none against your point of view. Remember you have to develop an argument. That means, you will have to show a good understanding, through research, that shows that you are aware of the controversy and you can argue your stance on the topic based on evidence found. Your evidence is reflected in the depth of research –> your references. You develop an argument by showing in depth understanding of the topic. You win the argument with academic evidence. It’s an argumentative essay not one of opinion. I) Introduction – hook – background information to the topic – thesis statement – your stand on the topic – introduction to your main claims II) Body 1) first claim – strongest argument against your point of view –> topic sentence a) definition and/or background information, supporting details and arguments b) sum up how this is this relevant to the claim made c)result of the claim d) rebuttal, your rebuttal HAS TO be in direct response to the claim against your point of view i) background information/definition/supporting details and arguments ii) sum up how this is relevant to your counter argument iii) result of your counter claim e) close the first paragraph with a summary of pro and con and finalise why your counter claim is more relevant 2) second claim follow the same structure as in the first claim 3) Third claim finish off with the same structure, begin the paragraph with the weakest claim against yourself and finish up with your strongest argument in the rebuttal follow the same structure III) Conclusion – sum up all findings – restate the thesis statement – recommendation/suggestion this is the more difficult but also most logical structure to follow Alternatively you can write 6 paragraphs, follow the first three as above but your rebuttals can be a bit looser and only argue against the claim with common sense the last 3 paragraphs are then for you to build your winning argument with the strongest claims you have
