Please write an essay in which you defend your position on the following topic:
Encryption involves rewriting a message into a secret code that only the intended receiver can interpret. Encryption is apparently being used by criminals and terrorists to prevent authorities from intercepting their communications. Should encryption technologies be restricted?
With the permission of the unit coordinator, you may choose an alternative ICT communication topic, e.g., related to your work.
The essay should be 800 to 1600 words in length.
Learn to Write an Essay
We will work through the development of an example essay in class. ALC provide workshops and resources on writing essays including an introduction to academic writing book chapter.
Analyse the Topic
Find and read at least three quality articles related to the topic. Choose your articles based on AAOCCR (accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, coverage, and relevance) as discussed in Week 3.
Brainstorm your ideas and group them logically in a table as discussed in the introduction to academic writing chapter provided by ALC.
Outline your Essay
Develop an outline of your essay as discussed in the introduction to academic writing chapter provided by ALC.
Include a Thesis in the Introduction
Use cognate strategies in your introduction, as discussed in Week 3, to engage the reader. Make the last sentence of your introduction the thesis, or aim of your essay. Please adhere to the CQU Writing Style Guide, discussed in Week 3, throughout your essay.
Make Your Argument Structures Explicit
Please ensure simple arguments are presented in a single paragraph using Toulmin’s three sentence structure as discussed in Week 2: claim, data and warrant. Use phrases such as “it is claimed” to support the reader by making your argument structure explicit.
