Overview  
To identify the technology and resources relevant to your contribution to the project, you need to ensure your role is clearly defined. For example, you may be developing a mobile app and your role may be to design the UI. This will include developing concepts, creating mock-ups, developing final assets, seeking user feedback, implementing and testing iterations of your UI design. You need to identify the technology and resources (including human resources, such as team members or test subjects) you’ll need to perform these tasks.
Existing Systems Overview
Investigate and report on existing systems that do similar tasks to the one you are proposing; note that such existing systems might not be digital; some systems are still manual and on paper. If you discover existing code, resources, components and so on that can aid in the development of your project, report on them too.  
This is an important step as it provides ideas based on existing work. It also highlights areas that you can exploit and improve upon, and ensures you do not reinvent the wheel. It is very rare to create an entirely new concept or system, so use existing material to guide your design phase. In short, this section presents research on existing solutions that may be, or have aspects that are like your project. Describe what they do, how they function and how they can be used by your team to better define your solution.
Explore your options. Investigate open source, off the shelf projects, etc. If the proposed project is unique (very rare), then investigate concepts that are similar and investigate the technology you will be using. Are there existing components you can use? What licenses do they exist under and what are the ramifications of using them? This is important as these aspects will determine the path your second assignment (systems analysis and design) and project will take. For instance, if you discover a method of developing a component of the application that requires certain technology, then that will influence future planning and decisions.
